The player controls Octodad, a dapper octopus masquerading as a human, as he goes about his life.

Inevitably the graphics are also far from impressive, which doesn’t matter too much except that the game tries to play the part of Pixar style animated movie during its cut scenes, and the game world and characters are nowhere near detailed enough for that. Octodad: Dadliest Catch - Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a game about destruction, deception, and fatherhood. There’s some good physical comedy going on here, which is not something video games are usually very good at – at least not purposefully so – but even the writing fails to be as sharp as it could be, with Octodad’s translated burbles being occasionally funny but the other characters left as one-dimensional ciphers. And once you realise that the developer hasn’t really understood the appeal of their own joke you quickly begin to stop cutting it any slack.

It’s not even that the game is hard, it’s just frustrating. The thing is Dadliest Catch is still not much more than two hours long, so it seems unlikely that anyone could’ve run out of ideas making it – they just fixated on the wrong ones. And frankly we would’ve preferred to keep it that way. This seems to completely misunderstand the appeal of the original, which was to make the mundane difficult.Īnd although it’s still simple stuff we’ve failed plenty of basketball mini-games in ordinary games without having the additional problem of playing as an octopus. Clearly these would be trivially easy in any other game but as the story progresses you start getting handed more normal video game tasks, such as a ball-tossing mini-game and a stealth section.
